For Immediate Release

Dearest DeafYoga Community,

As we enter the start of a new decade, DeafYoga Foundation, Inc. would like this opportunity to reflect, assess and announce the official closing of its nonprofit doors.  Since its inception in 2008, we have introduced yoga to thousands of Deaf yoga practitioners through classes, workshops and retreats in American Sign Language. In addition, we have certified nearly 50 Deaf yoga teachers and trained over 150 ASL interpreters on the nuances of interpreting yoga.  The foundation has also innovated various strategies to teach yoga to the Deaf community.

With this said, we have taken the time to assess the role of the foundation and feel it’s role in creating access to yoga for the Deaf community is no longer needed as it once was.  We are so happy to see so many Deaf yoga leaders teaching yoga across the globe. The number of Deaf yoga practitioners and interested participants have multiplied, bringing the many healing benefits of this practice to the community.

We would also like to express our heart-felt gratitude for each and every supporter and community member who has contributed to this volunteer-based movement over the past decade. Because of your dedication and commitment, we were able to successfully achieve our goals and actualize our mission.  We would never have been able to do this without you.

We believe this is not the end of yoga in ASL but rather the continuation of a momentum toward a larger mission of peace and equality. Thank you again for a wonderful 11 years of service!
