DEAF-FRIENDLY TECHNIQUES
for yoga teachers who do not know ASL
Here are just a few Deaf-friendly techniques that yoga teachers can use during their class to heighten our experience.
1) When we are in sivasana (on floor, lying on back) with eyes closed, lightly touch just above our ankles to let us know when meditation and/or relaxation is finished.
2) As in technique #1 if we are in a seated meditation, lightly touch an appropriate place (knee, foot, shoulder, etc.) to communicate “time to move on”.
3) While teaching your class, remember to face us as much as possible when speaking, especially since we read your entire being, and quite possibly your lips.
4) Use natural gestures to show breathing, alignment, pose, etc.
5) Learn basic signs such as warnings, namaste, inhale, exhale, etc.
6) Contact DeafYoga to create ASL yoga classes and a Deaf-friendly environment within your sacred teacher role, studio space or yoga school.
